Map of Adelaide 1849 now online!

Hello All.

A high quality Map of Adelaide from 1849 is now online:

Plan Of Country Sections &c In The Immediate Vicinity Of The City Of Adelaide In The Province Of South Australia 1849.
http://adelaide1849.com

Note that this map has its own domain name, but it is also accessible through the 'Australian Maps' page at the MAPCO website.

This is rare and beautiful map of the Adelaide Plains. I hope that you find it of interest. There will be further information relating to the places named on the map coming soon.

Unfortunately it has been a quiet year for MAPCO, due to work stress and subsequent related illness. However, I am confident that 2012 will see continued publication of more quality antique map images. Those with Irish connections may want to keep an eye on the 'News' page, as there will be a huge and very rare 1838 Map of Ireland displayed early in the New Year.

Best wishes to all for a happy, safe, and prosperous year ahead in 2012!

Kind regards,

David.

Another edition of Stanford's huge and highly detailed Library Map of London is now online:

It is also accessible through the London Map page at the MAPCO website.

This is the third of MAPCO's copies of Stanford's Library Map of London to be displayed. An overview comparison of the 3 maps can be viewed here, each with a pop-up of a map from another year when you hover your mouse over the image. Take a look, and hover your mouse over the images (hover in and out to swap the images back and forth). Click the image to advance to the next years, and click the map title to return to the 1872 map home page.

Stanford’s Library Map Of London And Its Suburbs

MAPCO's current big project is another copy of Stanford’s Library Map Of London And Its Suburbs, this time from the 1870s.

The scans were completed and digitally prepared for display in January. The web pages are currently being prepared, and place names are being transcribed from the map images.

This will be the third copy of Stanford's London map displayed on the MAPCO website, which, along with Weller's 1868 map of London, provide a wonderful snapshot of the Metropolis throughout the 1860s and 1870s.

Work restrictions make progress on some map projects quite slow, but I am optimistic that this map should be on display by the end of March.

Indicator Map of Sydney 1925

MAPCO has been trawling the archived image folders from 2010 and found a number of maps that were scanned but not displayed. Among these were Woolcott & Clarke's Map Of The City Of Sydney 1854, and a scarce indicator map of Sydney from 1925.

The indicator map was issued by The Indicator Map Co. Ltd., 9a Macquarie Place. It has a metal pointer that is used in conjunction with the street index on the rear of the map, enabling any street to be quickly and easily located.

This map will be displayed soon, along with the 1854 map of Sydney.

Map of Sydney 1854

MAPCO is currently working on Woolcott & Clarke's Map Of The City Of Sydney, With The Environs Of Balmain And Glebe, Chippendale Redfern, Paddington &c. (W.H. Baron Del. ; Engd. by J. Carmichael. Sydney. 1854.)

Digital restoration work is almost complete, and work will commence on the display web pages in the next few weeks.

This is a rare map that was saved during a renovation project in Surrey Hills. It is lucky to have survived.

I look forward to bringing this map to you soon.
